The Trump movement's most telling and characteristic occasions – not its most significant, nor most harsh, nor most threatening, nor most senseless, but perhaps its most illuminating – emerged earlier this harvest season. In the course of multiple weeks, the US president commenced revealing all observers his plans for a lavish reception room double the dimensions compared to the White House and then commenced unilaterally ripping down the East Wing to build it.
He has committed acts 10,000 times as bad – the current estimate of deaths resulting from his reductions to international aid stands at 600,000 and rising, and this week research forecast his fossil fuel policies would result in fatalities an additional 1.3 million. Yet nothing as characteristic. No previous president would have dared – really, no former commander would have conceived – solo demolishing significant portions of the executive mansion to build a Versailles-style party room, with the enthusiastic participation of multiple America's wealthiest, nearly all of which conduct transactions with the government.

As confusing as it is to observe the president seek to颠覆 the established notion of democracy and substitute it with its direct contrary, there is one large group of Americans who should not find it totally unfamiliar. That encompasses people such as ourselves – within elder demographics almost a majority – who were raised as conventional Protestant believers.
We have observed throughout the years while conservative evangelical congregations turned the Jesus we grew up with into the total contrary of our understanding of him. Essentially, they turned a figure of affection into a figure of hate who approves specifically the brutality that he condemned in scripture; this transformation occurred at a slower pace, across decades rather than months, yet it remains disturbing via comparable methods, a disorienting gut punch for many of us.
A Damaging Christianity Takes Hold
Therefore allow me to outline the Christ that I grew up with, since in theory Christ is the focus within Christian belief, and because the rapidly expanding group within America might have little sense about him as they consider themselves non-believers or agnostics or religiously unaffiliated. I raise no objection with any of these traditions, nor with any other faith; yet I maintain that there are pearls of great price within Christian narrative.
It is emphatically not the narrative of a mighty king arising; rather, a baby is born to homeless parents in an automotive shelter, who are forced to hastily depart to a different country to escape secret police. The infant develops in humble circumstances, a working carpenter; his message focuses on affection for other people, particularly for the poor – not merely emotional affection, but tangible care, expressed by feeding and housing. Jesus' answer to aggression is to offer the opposite cheek – not as a gesture of compliant endurance, but as a way to educate the assailant; his method regarding offenses is that if an individual takes your coat you must offer him your sweater also.
The evident and direct truth that the Jesus of the gospels requests a type of radical love concentrated on the impoverished has consistently rendered the Christian faith rather a provocative belief system: attractive to the general public, but due to its intrinsic extremism requiring to be restrained. In the 1950s it was controlled through watering down – Protestantism was so prevalent that it basically baptized the status quo.
A Battle for the Highest Within Us
Therefore I have felt encouraged to witness the persistent defiance regarding Trump emerge in this past year. It has been significant comfort to participate in developing the initiative that has taken to the streets via continuous gatherings, and appears to have motivated citizens to show up in numbers in interim political contests. We will need to persist with it, and with identical determination, featuring US banners at every demonstration and requests to the highest qualities in US history.
We're going to be asked ... how did you receive the foreigner? Did you accept these individuals and embrace them or reject?
America is best defended, essentially, through connection to the highest within national tradition, similar to Christianity is best defended by reference to elements that cause it to be special and wonderful, specifically the model of the Savior. In both situations does it imply pretending the worst of both America and religious tradition did not happen; it represents both meekness and conviction, a blend that genuine American Christians should be comfortable with.
